How to Choose Keywords That Actually Rank Template: How-To Blog Post

Introduction

Ranking on Google isn’t about stuffing in keywords. It’s about targeting the right ones— so you reach the right audience, at the right time.

This guide shows you how to do manual keyword research using free tools—no paid  software needed.

Step 1: Create a Seed Keyword List

Think of core topics you want to rank for.

Example:

• Website design for therapists

• Instagram growth tips

• Wedding planning checklist

• Family lawyer Ottawa

Use your service keywords + audience-specific terms.

Step 2: Use Google Autocomplete + "People Also Ask"

Start typing into Google and note the autocomplete suggestions.

Type:

“website copywriting for…”

Google may show:

• “coaches”

• “real estate agents”

• “ecommerce”

Explore “People Also Ask” boxes for deeper insights.

Step 3: Check Keyword Difficulty

Use free tools:

• Ubersuggest

• Ahrefs Free Keyword Generator

• Keywords Everywhere Chrome extension

Focus on:

• Keywords with 50–1,500 monthly searches • Difficulty score under 30

• Long-tail phrases (4+ words) for better chances

Step 4: Analyze the SERP

Google your keyword.

Ask:

• Are the top results blog posts, videos, or product pages?  • Are they from big brands or small businesses?  • Can I write something more helpful than what’s there?

Step 5: Validate With This Checklist

• Is the keyword specific to my offer/niche?

• Is the intent clear (informational vs commercial)?  • Do I have something valuable to say about this?  If yes → you’ve got a winner.

Step 6: Use It in an Optimized Post

Once you’ve picked your keyword:

• Put it in your title

• Use it in the first 100 words

• Include in 1–2 H2s, meta description, and image alt text

Don’t overdo it—keep it natural.

Conclusion

Great keywords lead to great traffic—but only if you choose them wisely.

Use this process monthly to refresh your content strategy and stay ahead of  competitors. Better keywords = better leads.
